Google Business Profile: A 12-Point Local SEO Checklist for Indian SMBs

When someone in your city searches for "dentist near me" or "CA firm in New Delhi", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website appears. Those three slots — the Local Pack — collect a large share of the calls. Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is what decides whether you are in them.

Most small businesses create a profile once, add a phone number and never touch it again. That is good news for you: a little consistent effort puts you ahead of most of your competitors. Here is the checklist we use with clients.

Get the foundations right

  1. Verify the profile. Unverified profiles rarely rank. Complete verification by video, phone or postcard, whichever Google offers.
  2. Use your real business name. Do not stuff keywords like "Best Skin Clinic New Delhi" into the name. It violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  3. Choose the most specific primary category. "Pediatric dentist" beats "Dentist" if that is what you do. Add relevant secondary categories, but only ones that genuinely apply.
  4. Keep your name, address and phone consistent. The details on your profile, website, Justdial, IndiaMART and other listings should match exactly. Inconsistency confuses Google and customers alike.

Make the profile persuasive

  1. Write a useful description. Use the 750 characters to explain who you serve, what you are known for and the areas you cover. Write it for people, not algorithms.
  2. Add services and products with prices where possible. Each service entry is another chance to match a search, and visible prices pre-qualify enquiries.
  3. Upload real photos every month. Your storefront, team, workspace and work samples. Profiles with fresh, genuine photos tend to get more direction requests and calls than those with a single logo.
  4. Set accurate hours, including holidays. Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving to a closed shutter during Diwali. Update special hours before every festival.

Build trust with reviews

  1. Ask every happy customer for a review. Create a short review link from your GBP dashboard and send it on WhatsApp right after a good experience. Timing matters more than wording.
  2. Reply to every review, good or bad. Thank people by name. For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the issue and offer to resolve it offline. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews.
Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for five stars. Google actively removes suspicious reviews, and a suspended profile costs far more than a few slow months.

Stay active

  1. Publish a Google post every week. Offers, updates, new services, tips. Posts signal that the business is active and give searchers another reason to choose you.
  2. Answer questions in the Q&A section. Anyone can ask (and answer) questions on your profile. Seed it with the questions customers ask you on the phone, and answer them yourself.

Track what matters

Your GBP Performance tab shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that triggered your profile. Check it monthly. If calls are flat but views are rising, your photos, reviews or description are not convincing enough. If views are falling, look at categories, consistency and activity.

For better tracking, add UTM parameters to your website link so visits from your profile show up clearly in Google Analytics.

The bottom line

Local SEO is not a one-time setup. It is a routine: a few photos, one post, a handful of review requests and replies every week. Done consistently for three to six months, that routine often becomes the most cost-effective lead source a local business has.
