"We tried Facebook ads, they don't work for us." We hear this from small business owners every week. Usually the ads were not the problem. The budget was spread across too many audiences, the creative was an afterthought and nobody was tracking what happened after the click.
₹20,000 a month — roughly ₹650 a day — is a perfectly workable budget for Meta ads if you use it with discipline. Here is the approach we recommend.
Decide on one goal before you spend
A small budget cannot chase awareness, engagement and sales at the same time. Pick one outcome that directly affects revenue: WhatsApp conversations, lead form submissions or website purchases. Then choose the matching campaign objective in Ads Manager — Leads or Sales, not Traffic or Engagement.
Meta's algorithm optimises for exactly what you ask for. Ask for clicks and you will get cheap clicks from people who never buy.
Keep the structure simple
With limited spend, every ad set needs enough data to learn. Splitting ₹650 a day across five ad sets leaves each one starving. A structure that works:
- One prospecting campaign (around 70–80% of budget) with a single broad or lightly targeted ad set.
- One retargeting campaign (around 20–30%) reaching people who visited your website, engaged with your Instagram or watched your videos.
Use Advantage+ placements unless you have a clear reason not to. Let the system find cheap results across Facebook, Instagram, Reels and Stories.
Creative is your targeting
As audience targeting has become broader, the creative now decides who stops scrolling. A good ad speaks so clearly to a specific customer that the right people self-select.
- Lead with the customer's problem or desired result in the first two seconds.
- Show real people, your real product and real results. Polished stock imagery underperforms.
- Use vertical 9:16 video for Reels and Stories, and 4:5 for the feed.
- Add captions — most people watch without sound.
- State the offer and the next step plainly: "Book a free consultation", "Get the price list on WhatsApp".
Launch with three to five different creatives in the same ad set and let Meta show the winners more often. Refresh the losers every two to three weeks.
Track beyond the click
Install the Meta Pixel and, if you can, the Conversions API so results are tracked accurately even with browser privacy restrictions. For WhatsApp campaigns, keep a simple sheet of which conversations turned into sales.
The number that matters: not cost per click, not even cost per lead, but cost per customer. A ₹400 lead that converts at 20% is far cheaper than a ₹150 lead that never picks up the phone.
Be patient for the first two weeks
Every new ad set goes through a learning phase. Avoid editing budgets, audiences or creatives daily — each significant change resets learning. Review performance every three to four days, and make decisions on at least a week of data.
Common mistakes that waste small budgets
- Boosting posts from the Instagram app instead of using Ads Manager.
- Narrowing targeting so tightly that the audience is a few thousand people.
- Sending traffic to a slow homepage instead of a focused landing page or WhatsApp.
- Responding to leads hours later. Call or message within five minutes — conversion rates drop sharply after that.
When to scale
Once you have a stable cost per customer for two to three weeks, increase the budget by 20–30% at a time. Sudden jumps often push costs up. Growth on Meta is a series of measured steps, not a single leap.
